Description
Shiv chalisa is a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva , one of the principal deities in Hinduism ,similar to the more widely known Hanuman chalisa . Shiv chalisa is a set to forty verses or couplets that invoke the blessing of Lord Shiva .
The word "chalisa" is derived from the hindi word " chalis" which means " forty " and the composition typically contains forty verses In the case of " shiv chalisa " , each describes the attributes ,powers and legends associated with Lord Shiva Devotees recite or sing the shiv chalisa as a form of prayer and worship , dseeking there divine grace of Lord Shiva .
The verses often narrates aspects of Lord shiva's life , such as his cosmic dance , (Tandava ) , his role as the destroyer of the evil , and his benevolent nature as a compassionate deity .
As the many devotional compositions different versions of "Shiv chalisa" may exist , comp;osed by various poets , but they share a common theme of reverence and devotion of Lord Shiva .
