Amāvásyā Indian calendars use 30 lunar phases, called tithi in India. The dark moon tithi is when the moon is within the 12 degrees of angular distance between the sun and moon before conjunction. This festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. The New Moon tithi (called Pratipada or Prathama) is 12 angular degrees after. Amāvásyā is often translated as new moon since there is no standard term for the moon before conjunction in English. The peepal tree is very important in this festival because every Indian woman worships peepal on this day.
Meaning:
In the pūrṇimānta māna Hindu lunar calendar used in most parts of the Indian subcontinent, the lunar month starts on the day following the full moon, or purnima, and therefore Amāvásyā always falls in the middle of the month. However, in the amnta mna calendar used in some places, the lunar month starts on the day of the new moon, making Amāvásyā the last day of the lunar month in those places. Many festivals, the most famous being Diwali (the festival of lights), are observed on Amāvásyā. Many Hindus fast on Amāvásyā.

Few Pancha-Gauda Brahmins have a month from the next day of Purnima (day) to Purnima (day); that is, Purnima lasts 29/30 days (Purnimanta). Pancha-Dravida has a month from the next day of Amavasya to Amavasya. Amavasya lasts 29–30 days (Amanta). Śhukla paksha is called the bright half as the moon changes from the new moon to the full moon, while in Krishna paksha it changes from the full moon to the new moon. Hence, it is seen that the same Amavasya has the same festival all over the country. Ujjain, Allahabad, Orissa, and Bihar Brahmins are a few Pancha-Gauda Brahmins who have a month from 1 day after Purnima to Purnima (day) (Purnimanta), while the people of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, the Pancha-Dravida, have a month from 1 day after Amavasya to Amavasya. Amavasya lasts 29–30 days (Amanta). Since Kanchipuram Mutt, where the Adi Shankara lived, and all the Pancha-Gauda and Pancha-Dravida used to visit, Tamil Nadu developed a mixture of the Panchangam and Saka calendar. Similarly, the places where Pancha-Gauda and Pancha-Dravida are living together, such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Southern Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, also show the mixtures. Also, the people following Jainism follow the Pancha-Dravida calendar; Amavasya lasts for 29–30 days.

Worship of Forefathers (Pitra)
Every month, the Amāvāsyā day is considered auspicious for the worship of forefathers and poojas are made. Religious people are not supposed to travel or work, and instead concentrate on the rites of Amavasyas, typically at home in the afternoon. Even today, traditional workers like masons do not work on Amavasya in India. However, they will work on Saturdays and Sundays. Even High Court judges of 18th century India used to observe Amavasya as a day off. It was the British Rule that brought the Christian Sunday-off principle to Indian industry.

On Amavasyas, Shraadh is done to forefathers by Brahmins whose fathers have died. In modern times, a short 20-minute version of the ceremony is done—offering black sesame and water as oblation to departed souls. This oblation is offered to father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. If one of these persons are still alive, their name is skipped and the corresponding earlier generation person is offered oblation. Then a final oblation is offered to those anonymous souls which died and have nobody in their lineage offering oblation. These oblations are believed to give birth to good children without mental or physical challenges.

Hariyali Amavasya is the new moon of the Shravan month and falls during the months of July-August in the English calendar. Like other Amavasya, it holds strong religious values for the people of Hindu community.

In Hindi language, ‘Amavasya’ implies ‘no moon day’ and ‘Hariyali’ means ‘greenery’, therefore Hariyali Amavasya is observed as moon festival during the rainy season, when the nature blossoms at it best. The festivities of Hariyali Amavasya are very renowned in Northern states of India like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. It is famous in other regions as well but with different names. In Maharashtra it is called ‘Gatari Amavasya’, in Andhra Pradesh as ‘Chukkala Amavasya’ and in Orissa it is celebrated as ‘Chitalagi Amavasya’. As with the names, the rituals and traditions vary in different parts of the country, but the spirit of celebrations remains same.

Rituals during Hariyali Amavasya:
In Hinduism, the day of Amavasya is dedicated to one’s ancestors or forefathers. Much in the same way, on Hariyali Amavasya, devotees get up early and take a bath. Following this, puja is performed to appease the ancestors, or ‘pitrs’. A special meal is prepared and offered to Brahmins. The male member of the family performs all the ancestral rites to offer peace to their deceased family members.
The festival of Hariyali Amavasya is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees worship Him with full devotion and seek His blessings for good rains and a bountiful harvest. Shiva Puja on Hariyali Amavasya is believed to bring wealth and prosperity. Devotees recite Vedic mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva and sing bhajans in His praise. Special darshans and rituals are held in Lord Shiva temples all across the country.
In some regions, people also observe a fast on this day. Only meals are taken during the day after completing all the pooja rituals.
Grand fairs are also organized on Hariyali Amavasya in different parts of India. In Udaipur, the celebrations last for three continuous days. Fun, food, and frolic mark this grand fair. Women collectively pray for the welfare of their husbands.
Significance of Hariyali Amavasya:
Hariyali Amavasya is an eventful day for Hindus that falls three days before the celebrations of ‘Hariyali Teej’. The month of ‘Shravan’ is the 5th month of the Hindu lunar calendar and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Moreover, this month is also associated with the monsoon season, which in turn is crucial for a good harvest and the prevention of droughts. According to Hindu legends, the month of ‘Shravan’ is auspicious for gaining the blessings of Hindu gods and goddesses. On Hariyali Amavasya, performing Pirtu Tarpan and Daan Punya activities is also considered to be very rewarding.
Also in Hindu culture, trees are represented in the form of gods, and people worship them on Hariyali Amavasya. In some regions, there is a tradition of worshipping the ‘Peepal’ tree on this day. As Hariyali Amavasya marks the start of the monsoon season, planting a sapling on this day is considered to be very fruitful.
